Picture this: I’m standing on the 17th hole of The Players Course at Sawgrass, one of the most renowned golf courses in the U.S., famed for hosting The Players Championship. Known for its iconic and treacherous design, the 17th is a true test of skill, with factors like wind, pin position, and surrounding water adding layers of difficulty. It’s Sunday pin placement is no joke!
I pull out my six iron, go through my pre-shot routine, and swing. BAM! The ball soars off the tee, carries the water, and heads toward the green. I lose sight of it, but the roar from the viewers across the lake on the 16th fairway- and green- tells me all I need to know. “Get in the hole!” they shout. I can feel the excitement ripple through me. Moments later, I sink the putt for a birdie.
Here’s the kicker: at that time, I’d only been playing golf for two and a half years, with lessons I could count on one hand.
So why am I telling you this? What’s the point?
This isn’t just a story about golf. It’s a tribute to the transformative power of finding something you love- a passion that becomes a cornerstone for every other aspect of your life. For me, that’s golf. But it could be anything for you.
Don’t have a hobby you’re passionate about yet? Stop everything and make it your goal to discover your passion before the year is over. Why?
Here are 10 ways this passion has changed my life.
Mental Wellness
Golf is a mental escape. Whether practicing on the range or playing 18 holes, I have learned to control how much or how little I let life’s chaos interfere with my game. Golf provides an outlet and brief escape from the outside world. It’s a place for peace and realignment, as well as a place for physical challenge and growth and development.
Physical Wellness
Surprisingly, golf is a physically demanding sport. When I first started, I couldn’t make it through 14 holes without feeling exhausted. Today, I can play three rounds over three days, thanks to training and intentional effort.
Discipline and Patience:
It’s been a while since I’ve taken on something completely new. The challenge stretches my comfort zone, offers a new sort of skill building, and even provides the rush of accomplishment. The game of golf has taught me to embrace patience and discipline- skills that extend far beyond the course.
Family Connections:
Golf has brought my family closer. My husband plays, my son took it up in high school, and my daughter joined in so we could spend quality time together away from the noise. Sundays on the course have become our favorite way to connect as a family and create lasting memories.
Career Impact:
I started playing golf because my business partner encouraged me to join him. As a CPA, in an industry dominated by men, I’ve stood out as a female golfer and tax practitioner, but getting in the game has allowed me to build credibility and solidarity on and off the course.
Networking:
Joining a golf networking group three years ago was a game-changer. It’s been a pillar for building professional relationships, generating referrals, and creating strategic alliances. Now as a member of Grande Oaks Golf Club, being able to invite these connections to a (4 hour) round of golf, has allowed me to deepen the relationship and foster true partnership opportunities that a lunch simply cannot facilitate.
Philanthropy:
I’ve combined my passion for golf with giving back through charity tournaments and events. I was recently selected to chair a nonprofit's annual golf tournament and the experience was deeply fulfilling. It offered me an opportunity to demonstrate my leadership skills and golf skills to local business leaders and community stakeholders while supporting an incredible cause.
Travel:
Golf has taken me to some of the most beautiful courses along the East Coast, igniting a newfound passion for travel and exploration. Whether with my family or my partners at PLR, golf trips have become the preferred method of reconnection, bonding, and planning.
Strengthening Relationships:
Whether bonding with my husband, strengthening my relationship with my son, or laughing with business partners, the sport has deepened some of the most important relationships in my life in ways I never imagined.
Community:
The golf community is one of encouragement and inclusivity. I’ve never heard, “You don’t belong here,” or “Maybe you should quit.” Instead, I’ve been met with support from friends, family, and colleagues to keep improving my game.
But here’s the most important lesson: you can replace the word “golf” with anything that lights your soul on fire.
This year, I encourage you to find your passion- whatever it may be- and let it become a pillar for every aspect of your life. Let your passion inspire personal growth, strengthen your relationships, improve your well-being, and bring joy to every corner of your life. The key is to make it YOURS!
