How to Live Life On Purpose

Imagine waking up every day with a deep sense of clarity, purpose, and alignment. Picture a life where you’re not just chasing success, but living in your fullest potential, knowing that every decision and action is rooted in your unique purpose on this earth. 

As I awoke this morning, I felt a profound, almost electric sense of connectedness with myself, an energy vibrating from within the very core of my being. Overflowing with clarity and purpose, I recognize this as the Holy Spirit, my higher power, present within me- working through me every day. It is a presence I’ve learned to acknowledge, trust, and surrender to wholeheartedly.

Through my ongoing quest to understand life in all its intricacies, I’ve developed this connectedness with myself that is pure, gentle, patient, kind, rooted in love, and dedicated to service and community. Even in the face of life’s trials and triumphs, in grief and joy, loss and victory, at the center of it all is an undeniable power source, a light of hope, acceptance, and resilience that continues to shine within me. It is this grounding force, this unwavering trust in God and my purpose, that allows my soul the freedom to fully experience the journey of life, and all of its twists and turns, with courage, depth and authenticity. 

I live, love, and move forward, grounded in a force greater than myself.

Inner alignment is a powerful tool that can impact many aspects of our lives. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that a strong sense of purpose can significantly reduce stress and even decrease mortality rates by up to 15% (NIH, 2023). Similarly, the Journal of Behavioral Medicine highlights that individuals who prioritize holistic wellness including spiritual practices, self-reflection, and mindfulness report 23% higher levels of life satisfaction and resilience (Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 2022).

For me, inner alignment has grown with time, through a process I honor daily. In this article, I’ll share the powerful practice I use to stay grounded, aligned, and rooted in my purpose, no matter the challenges or triumphs life throws my way. It’s a practice that can help you find clarity, peace, and a profound sense of purpose. 

Here are the 4 R’s to awaken to your true purpose and confidently shift your energy toward the life you’ve been designed to lead.

1. Recognize: Tune In to Your Energy

The first step to shifting your energy is recognition. Before making any changes, it's crucial to become aware of the energy you’re currently carrying—both the positive and the negative. Recognizing the current state of your inner world allows you to take stock of what’s serving you and what’s holding you back.

Often, we’re unaware of how much emotional baggage, unproductive thought patterns, or outside influences are impacting us. Taking a pause to assess your energy helps you identify what needs attention.

How to do it:

  • Pause and reflect: Take time each day to check in with yourself. How are you feeling emotionally? Are there any recurring negative thoughts or feelings weighing you down?
  • Be mindful: When you recognize negative patterns, give them space without judgment. Just observe them. Are there certain situations or people draining your energy? What thoughts or beliefs do you constantly revisit?
  • Journal: Writing down your observations can be a powerful tool. By putting your thoughts on paper, you can see more clearly what may be contributing to your current state of mind.

This awareness is the foundation of the 4R’s practice because it’s impossible to shift what you don’t acknowledge.

2. Release: Let Go of What No Longer Serves You

Once you’ve recognized the negative energies or influences in your life, the next step is to release them. Releasing is about letting go of anything—be it emotional baggage, unhealthy habits, negative thought patterns, or relationships—that no longer serves your well-being, goals, or purpose.

Release doesn’t mean forcing or pushing things away; it’s a gentle surrender. It’s about making the conscious decision to no longer hold onto things that limit you. As you do this, you make space for new, more aligned energies to enter.

How to do it:

  • Visualize releasing: Sit quietly and visualize the things you wish to release. Picture them floating away from you like leaves on a stream. Let them go with love and gratitude for the lessons they’ve brought, but without attachment.
  • Set boundaries: Identify people or situations that drain your energy. Set clear boundaries to protect your space and peace of mind. This may mean saying no more often or walking away from relationships or obligations that no longer align with your values.
  • Forgive: If emotional baggage or past hurts are weighing you down, allow yourself the grace of forgiveness. Holding onto resentment or anger only keeps you stuck. Letting go of the past can free you to embrace the future with open arms.

Releasing is a powerful way to clear your emotional and mental space, enabling you to make room for new, aligned energy.

3. Refine: Strengthen Your Core Qualities

After you’ve recognized and released what no longer serves you, the next step is to refine. This stage is about enhancing the positive qualities within you that empower you to live authentically and with purpose.

Refining isn’t about becoming someone different; it’s about embracing your truest self and allowing your core qualities—those strengths and gifts that define you—to flourish. The more you focus on refining these qualities, the more aligned you become with your purpose.

How to do it:

  • Celebrate your strengths: Reflect on your innate strengths and qualities. What are the positive traits that empower you? Whether it’s compassion, resilience, creativity, or leadership, celebrate these aspects of yourself.
  • Embrace your authenticity: In this step, focus on being your authentic self. Stop trying to be who you think you should be. Instead, align with the person you already are at your core.
  • Develop your talents: Take time to hone your gifts. Whether it’s through learning, practice, or simply applying your strengths more often, refining your talents allows you to live more fully in alignment with your purpose.

By focusing on refinement, you amplify your best qualities, setting yourself up for greater fulfillment and success.

4. Realign: Step Into Your Purpose with Clarity

The final step in the 4R’s Energy-Shifting Practice is realignment. This is where you bring all the previous steps together to step into a new phase of growth and transformation. After recognizing your energy, releasing what no longer serves you, and refining your core qualities, you are now ready to realign with your true purpose.

Realignment is about taking intentional action from a place of clarity and grounded energy. It’s about stepping into the next phase of your journey with renewed focus and purpose, knowing that you are in alignment with your highest self.

How to do it:

  • Set intentional goals: With a clear sense of who you are and what you want to create, set goals that align with your purpose. These goals should reflect your deepest desires, not just external expectations.
  • Live with intention: Start making choices that are aligned with your core values and authentic self. From the small daily decisions to the larger life choices, let alignment guide your path.
  • Trust the process: Once you’ve realigned, trust that the universe or your higher power will guide you to the right opportunities, people, and circumstances. Stay open to what comes next, and embrace each step with confidence.

Realignment allows you to move forward with clarity, knowing that every action you take is rooted in your truth and purpose.

The 4R’s Energy-Shifting Practice is a transformative tool for anyone looking to align with their purpose, clear away the clutter, and step into a life of authenticity and fulfillment. By recognizing your current energy, releasing what no longer serves you, refining your core strengths, and realigning with your purpose, you can create the space you need to thrive.

As we enter a new year, take a moment to reflect on where you are and where you want to be. Embrace the 4R’s as a daily practice, and let them guide you toward a life that is more aligned, more intentional, and more in tune with your true gifts.
